Clara Flores, Dallas, TX
Clara Flores is a single mother who received training for a teaching career in her native country of Peru. When she moved to the United States she found that her education and teaching credentials were not recognized and that she would not be able to work as a teacher. She earned her GED, took English as a Second Language (ESL) classes and was able to get a job as a teacher’s aide in the Dallas Independent School District, where her ability to speak Spanish was highly valued. She took placement tests for the local community college and was required to take ESL, reading, writing and math developmental classes before being allowed to begin her college-level courses. She is now a sophomore at DCCCD’s Eastfield College, working on an associate in arts degree and plans to continue at an area university. She is looking forward to the day when she will be able to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher in the Dallas area.
